“To compile statistics and carry out data analytics to aid the conduct of professional economic research, facilitate the implementation of Monetary Policy decisions and the general running of the Bank’s business”
The Department, which originally formed part of the Research and Financial Stability Department, was established effective January 1, 2023 following the Bank’s organisational restructuring. The Department is responsible for creating a dedicated information, data management and analytics service to encompass three distinct functions:
- an integrated data management and analytics services for policy and regulatory purposes. This includes the current prudential, financial, currency, monetary and external sector statistical functions performed across several Departments;
- production of internal corporate metrics and analytics for management information and monitoring; and
- to provide effective communication through statistics with a view to inform, educate and influence decision making by the Bank and key stakeholders.
The Department will also be the locus for assessing prospects for use of non-traditional data sources such as Big Data and integration of the same into the Bank’s information management and analysis of policy frameworks. Overall, it will allow for better collaboration and cooperation with other statistics producing organisations to reduce multiple points of contact for the financial market industry and general public.
To support its mandate, the Department maintains relevant external contacts, including the Botswana Government, domestic businesses, other central banks, and international financial institutions. The Department further benefits from technical assistance provided by various regional and international organisations such as the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The Department is headed by a Director and supported by one Deputy Director.
